Laser ear surgery

Ear surgeries are performed for the treatment of ear from diseases, accidents, injuries or deformations. Deformities or problems of the ear occur due to variety of reasons, ranging from genetic to accidents or severe stress or trauma.

Also problems can occur in various parts of the ear like the outer ear, ear tube, middle ear, inner ear, vestibule systems or ear drum etc. Specific surgeries are considered for these cases.

Ear surgery in the middle or inner ear is a complicated surgery and is normally performed with a microscope. The surgeon requires opening and passage into the ear in order to remove unwanted growth or to place tubes or implants etc.

Laser technology comes in very handy in such an ear surgery. In recent times, Laser ear surgery has had a big impact in such surgeries and is making it more effective and reducing post-operation problems and the use of laser in ear surgery related to middle and inner ears is increasing.

For example laser comes in very handy in Stapedectomy, which is an ear surgery performed to remove portions of the whole of the stapes bone, in the middle ear.

In the general procedure, the surgeon tries to chip away the portions of the stapes bone using a tiny chisel or pick tool. This has a risk of causing hearing loss, ringing of the ears or dizziness to the patient.

With the help of laser, a lot of vibrations that normally occur during the delicate parts of the ear surgery are eliminated. Along with this, laser helps eliminate the risks and ensures a high success rate in such an ear surgery.

Laser also helps the surgeon to reach places in the inner or middle ear during the ear surgery, which are normally hard to reach. The other advantage of the Laser ear surgery is that it can be performed in a normal office operating suite.

After the ear surgery the patient is advised to keep his ear canal dry for a month. During showers it is advisable to avoid water entering into the ear during this period.

Stitches made during the surgery if any are normally absorbable stitches and removal is not necessary. Patients should avoid activities that might cause pressure or affect the ear.

Dizziness is normally common after this type of surgery, but usage of laser in ear surgery help reduce the frequency and severity of them to a large extent.

As we can see advancement in surgical techniques and usage of laser in ear surgery can definitely help improve the accuracy and the success rate of ear surgeries while reducing complications.
