Foot neuroma surgery

Neuroma is a condition in which the nerves of the foot are affected. These happen mostly in the ball of the foot. Due to abnormal movement of the bones in the balls of the foot this might happened and it lead to a condition called neuroma.

In extreme cases the nerves are completely damaged and there is a necessity to remove those nerves. A foot neuroma surgery is one that is needed for this purpose.

Local anesthesia or an intravenous anesthesia is given for a foot neuroma surgery. The surgery can be performed in the surgeon’s office itself or it can be done as an outpatient in some other clinical environment.

Incisions are made to perform the foot neuroma surgery. There are two way to have the incisions done in the foot neuroma surgery. The first one is to make the incisions on the top of the foot and the second one is to make the incision at the bottom in the location of the neuroma.

Making incisions at the top of the foot is recommended by most of the surgeons for a foot neuroma surgery. This is because the patient can walk after the surgery.

If the incisions are made at the bottom of the foot for the foot neuroma surgery, the patient might be required to use crutches for movement.

Healing process at the top of the foot is faster than the healing process at the bottom of the foot. Hence the choice of incision at the top is recommended by most of the surgeons for a foot neuroma surgery.

After the foot neuroma surgery and during the recovery period the patient is required to visit the surgeon for proper checkup and for redressing.

To avoid any infection after a foot neuroma surgery the foot in which the surgery has been done has to be dry for around 2 to 3 weeks. Limited walking can be done using post operative shoes after the foot neuroma surgery.

It is recommended to have the foot high above the level of heart so that healing is faster. Sutures are removed after 2 weeks usually in this foot neuroma surgery.

After a foot neuroma surgery the patient is not recommended to go back to work until they are recovered to wear the normal shoes. For people who do more of walking and standing during work time it is better not to return to work until they are properly recovered.
