Elbow Replacement Surgery

What is Elbow Replacement Surgery?

Elbow replacement surgery is a surgery done to replace the bones when the patient suffers from arthritis problem. Elbow replacement surgery is also referred as endoprosthetic elbow replacement or total elbow arthroplasty.

Arthritis causes damage to the cartilages and bone surfaces, there by leading to heavy pain. Hence an artificial joint which is known as prosthesis is replaced using Elbow replacement surgery. Normally the joint which connects the humerus at the upper arm and the ulna at the lower arm will get worn and it might not function properly. This surgery replaces such worn parts with metal implants.

This artificial joint usually consists of two stems of metal of high quality. A plastic hinge and this metal joins the stem together which allows the bending of artificial joint. These joints also come in different sizes to fit to different sized people.

Need for Elbow Replacement Surgery

Elbow replacement surgery is needed when the patient is suffering from one of the following: osteoarthritis, bone broken severely at the joint, rheumatoid arthritis, tissues torn or get damaged at the elbow, and tumor around the elbow.

Elbow Replacement Surgery Procedure

The patient is given general anesthesia. The surgeon will make an incision at the back of the elbow joint since most of the nerves and blood vessels are at inside portion of the elbow. After that the surgeon will remove the ligaments and tendons. When the joint is exposed, the joint surfaces of the radius and ulna are removed using surgical saw.

Then the surgeon will hallow out the space within the ulna with the help of rasp for holding the metal stem of ulnar component. After fitting the ulnar component into the bone, the surgeon will repeat the procedure at the humerus.

After humerus is fitted, surgeon will put pieces of the implant together to check if artificial joint works properly. Then the implant will be removed and the bone is made ready to cement the implant into it. Then the implant is cemented and put together.

The surgeon will recheck proper fitting and functioning of implant. Finally the incision will be sewed up. After that the patient will be made awake and sent to the recovery room.

Risks and Complications in Elbow Replacement Surgery

• Occurrence of general anesthesia allergies and incision site infections.

• Chances for nerve and blood vessel damages.
