Need for Shoulder Exercises after Surgery



When a patient has undergone shoulder surgery, the patient is insisted to work out physical therapy exercises to strengthen the shoulders and bring back its activities without any difficulty. If the patient does not do shoulder exercises after surgery, there will be a stiffness and weakness in the shoulders. Hence the patient will face extreme difficulty and discomfort while moving shoulders or making shoulder motions.

Prominent Shoulder Exercises after Surgery

After undergoing shoulder surgery, physiotherapist will recommend shoulder exercises and duration of exercise every day. Result of these exercises will be closely monitored by the physiotherapist. Listed below are the prominent Shoulder Exercises after surgery:

Pendulum Exercise: The patient must bend 90 degrees forward at his waist and move the arms ten times in clockwise direction and ten times in anti-clockwise direction. The patient can use a table or chair for support while bending down.

Assistive Shoulder Flexion Exercise: Patient must clasp both the hands and lift his arms above his head. The elbows must be kept straight while doing this exercise. This exercise has to be repeated ten times to twenty times in a session.

Shoulder Rotation Exercise: Elbow must be kept in place and the shoulder must be bladed down together. Then forearm must be sliding back and forth. Repeat this exercise 10 times for a particular session.

Active Walk-Up Exercise: Keep the elbow straight and make the fingers crawl on the wall to the maximum feasible height. When the fingers reach the maximum possible position, hold on for 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise 3 times per session.

Shoulder Internal Rotation Exercise: Bend the elbow at 90 degrees, hold a light weight object and raise the hands towards the stomach. Slowly return back to the original position. Repeat this exercise ten times.

Isometric Shoulder External Rotation Exercise: Keep the shoulder (that was treated) close to the wall and bend the elbow by 90 degrees. Now push the arm into wall and hold for five seconds. Then relax back and repeat it ten times.

Isometric Shoulder Adduction Exercise: Patient must press his upper arm against a pillow placed at the side of the body and hold for minimum five seconds. Patient must repeat this exercise ten times a session.

Isometric Shoulder Abduction Exercise: Keep shoulder at the back of a chair and push arm in opposition to the chair by resisting upward motion at the side. Repeat it ten times.

Each of these exercises has to be done three sessions every day.
