Precausions to be Taken Post Cystoscopy Surgery

A specially designed thin tube to look inside the bladder, prostrate and the lower urinary tract called cystoscope helps in the diagnostic process called Cystoscopy.

Cystoscopy is done to assess and diagnose chronic pelvis pain, blood in the urine, urine tract infection, incapability to control urine, tumors in the bladder, congenital abnormalities in the bladder, kidney and bladder stones, enlarged prostrate, remove tissue for biopsy, symptoms of Interstitial cystitis, and any injury or malfunctioning of the urinary tract

The cystoscopy is of two types –flexible and rigid.

Flexible Cystoscopy

Both men and women are tested with the help of local anesthesia. Flexible cystoscope, a fiber optical device that is very flexible as the name suggests, goes through the bend curves of the urethra with a variable tip. This type is mostly used for the detection of tumors in the bladder.

Rigid Cystoscopy

This surgery is performed with general anesthesia with the help of a solid straight telescope with high power light. In this type of surgery, the patient has to take the lithotomy postion with the knees apart.

Cystoscopy whether flexible or rigid the patient is asked to urinate and the process takes from 10 to 40 minutes. Urine sample is taken with the help of a lubricated tube. Sterile water or saline is injected through the scope to expand the bladder so that the surgeon gets a good view.

Different types of instruments are inserted through this cystoscope for biopsy, removal of stones, collect tissue sample, take x-rays, surgically remove prostrate or bladder tumors and cauterize.

Post Cystoscopy Surgery

The patient feels burning sensation while urinating and at times there may be blood in the urine after the cystoscopy. People who have undergone this cystoscopy feel that it was not that painful and awkward as expected. The muscles may feel tired as the anesthesia wears off. In case of spinal anesthesia the patient takes time to get sensation below the chest and the patient feels tired and has backache till the next day after the test.

The side effects are very rare that may vary from too much bleeding, tear or puncture in the ureter, urethra or bladder, infection, formation of scar, reaction to anesthesia , inability to urinate due to bladder swelling or expansion. Acute urine retention is an emergency condition and medical intervention need to be done immediately.

Patients are advised to take warm bath after cystoscopy. Straining exercise and activities should be avoided until they are fully recover. The patient needs to take ample rest when general anesthesia was used for cystoscopy.

They should also avoid driving for some days. One should also keep a check on the urine which should clear up within two days. Post the test, one should avoid sexual relations till the urologist advises or till complete recovery.

Antibiotics are prescribed to keep away from infections and painkillers are given for pain relief. Plenty of water intakes can relieve the discomfort largely after the surgery. The cystpscopy procedure is a safe and is a boon in medical science which can detect and repair many problem related to the urinary tract.
