Suffering
from Cystoid Macular Edema after a Cataract Surgery
As we grow
old, our vision becomes weaker. Different people have different types
of eye problems and improper vision. One of the most popular eye problems
is the cataract problem. This results due to many ocular conditions such
as cataract
surgery macular deterioration due to age,
diabetics, injury, drug toxicity and many other reasons. However, this
mainly results after cataract surgery.
People who have had cataract surgery will experience less vision due to
this cystoids macular edema during the first post-operative year that
can start from two to four months from the surgery.
Sometimes this CME will recover by itself and needs no treatment but if
it persists, then therapy is necessary. There are fifty percent chances
of the second eye also being affected but most of the patients recover
well with treatment.
The treatment will depend on the condition of the patient and anti-inflammatory
medications are given to control the inflammation and the swelling of
the retina. These are usually eye drops although sometimes the doctor
also prescribes injections and oral medicines.
When the eye does not respond to any type of treatment then surgery called
vitrectomy is the only solution, which is performed by retina specialists.
At times, the patient also suffers from glaucoma that is pressure in the
eyes, which results due to the swelling and inflammation cause due to
cystoids macular edema. A diabetic patient is more at risk with this cystoids
macular edema problem. If the problem prolongs, there are chances of permanent
damage to the eye that results in loss of vision completely.
Treating patients with postoperative nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
reduces the risk of CME after a cataract surgery.
When the anterior vitrectomy and posterior capsule burst or tear open
during cataract surgery then there is more possible risk factor to develop
CME after a cataract surgery.
Research is on to determine the causes of various types of macular edema
including this cystoids macular edema and to treat inflammation after
the cataract surgery. With proper treatment, most of the patients affected
with this cystoids macular edema get back their normal vision.
