What
Causes Light Sensitivity after Cataract Surgery
First, let
us discuss what is light sensitivity. Light sensitivity also known as
photophobia is a common eye problem which is caused due to various reasons
but is easily treated. People with light sensitivity have problems with
sunlight, fluorescent light and incandescent light.
Headaches also go along with light sensitivity. Bright light bothers people
with light sensitivity and severe cases they get annoyed with any light.
This light sensitivity or photophobia is not an eye disease and is the
symptom of an infection or inflammation that irritates the eyes. It could
be related to underlying problems like virus affected diseases, migraine
or severe headaches.
People with dark color in the eyes have more pigment and are not easily
affected by light sensitivity whereas people with light colored eyes have
less pigment and are more prone to photophobia. At times genetic disorders
also cause photophobia.
Cataract is a situation where the patient has a blur or cloudy vision.
This cloudy vision is rectified by cataract surgery where the natural
lens is replaced by IOL or the intraocular lens to have clear vision.
With improper vision, the patient has to get their eyes operated.
The operation is a simple and easy procedure and the patient gets a clear
vision after the surgery. Light sensitivity is one of the symptoms of
cataract.
Generally, people have light sensitivity after a cataract surgery. They
are advised sunglasses to cover their eyes for two weeks. The causes for
this light sensitivity could be due to corneal abrasion, lens irritation.
The best way to treat this photophobia problem is to get to the root cause
of the problem. Medicines can help in some cases. In cataract, the problem
disappears after a few months. If the problem is persistent then consult
the physician who can get to know the root cause of the problem and treat
it accordingly.
It is better to avoid harsh lights, and bright sunlight. This is a part
of eye care treatment for patients after cataract surgery.
Photo chromatic lens is the answer for a mild light sensitivity and polarized
sunglasses protects the eyes from glare and flashy lights. Adjust the
television color and lights to avoid the glare.
If the problem persists, it is best to consult the surgeon or the eye
specialist for medications or for the necessary treatment.
