Quick
Recovery from Laparoscopic Surgery for Endometriosis in Women
Endometriosis
is a grave biological problem faced by millions of women today in which
the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows in the other parts of
the body causing severe pain, irregular bleeding and infertility. The
hormones affect these and worse still, it affects the menstrual cycle
of a woman who experiences severe pelvic pain in different forms.
The pain can be from mild to severe. The other endometriosis related pains
are:
Chronic pelvic pain This type of pain is usually associated
with abdominal pain and lower back pain
Dysuria Frequent urination, urgent urination and painful
discharge
Dyspareunia Painful sex
Dysmenorrhea Severe cramps during periods and the pain gets
worse with time
The other symptoms of endometriosis are continuous fatigue, constipation,
severe pain in the legs and thighs, unmanageable periods with large clots,
back pain, gastrointestinal problems, and mild to severe fever, low blood
sugar, depression, headaches, and pain without menstrual bleeding.
Laparoscopy is the procedure used to diagnose mild to moderate endometriosis.
The surgeon makes small incisions and inserts the laparoscope along with
the other surgical instruments to get a clear picture of the endometriosis.
Laparoscopic surgery also helps in removing the endometriosis and scar
tissue relieving the patient from the problem. Every patient will have
a different experience with laparoscopic surgery.
The surgeon advises the patient to avoid eating or drinking for at least
eight hour prior to the laparoscopic surgery. The surgery is performed
with the help of general anesthesia by the gynecologist or the surgeon.
The carbon dioxide gas is injected to the patient to inflate the abdomen
that pushes the abdominal wall away from the organs.
Small incisions made to insert the laparoscope and the other surgical
equipments during the procedure helps in viewing the problem and removing
the necessary parts. The entire laparoscopic surgery takes approximately
30 to 45 minutes.
The cutting or removing of the tissue is done with the help of the laser
or with electric current. The small incisions are closed with small stitches,
which usually leave no scar.
The older the patient the recovery time taken is more. Most of the women
feel tired after the surgery and a family member or friend will be of
great help for the first two days. The patient can drive after two weeks
but tub bathing, douching, swimming, and intercourse is completely restricted
for some days. Although the woman may feel tired, it is better to be on
feet as it helps in fast recovery.
Some women have emotional disturbances after the surgery but things get
back to normal very soon. It is better to be tolerant both physically
and mentally.
The first menstrual cycle after the surgery will vary considerably. There
is nothing to fear if the periods are heavy and lengthy as internal healing
takes place slowly than the external healing. The first few periods can
be painful but if the pain is very intense and unbearable then consult
the doctor immediately.
The laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis for infertility gives positive
effects to the woman giving them more room to become pregnant.
