Why
should you opt for Laparoscopic Surgery for Ovarian Cyst Removal?
Ovarian cyst
is a fluid filled sac in or on the ovary of a woman. Most of the ovarian
cysts are not cancerous and is formed due to ovulation. Such cysts that
are called the functional cysts disappear on its own within three months.
Ovarian cysts, that are not functional cysts, cause pain and bleeding.
These ovarian cyst are found in most of the premenopausal women in the
US. The size of this ovarian cyst may vary from the size of a pea to a
size of an orange.
Doctors generally advise sonogram test to diagnose and get detailed information
about the cyst. Then, he/she decides on the treatment depending on the
size of the cyst, age of the patient, and condition of the cyst.
When the
cyst does not shrink on its own, the doctor, depending on the condition
will advise a laparoscopic surgery. A surgery is necessary when the cyst
is too large or is in a condition to burst. A laparoscopic excision surgery
helps the doctor to know about the cause of the cyst
.
Laparoscopic surgery is a procedure where a laparoscope, which is a thin
tube with a light and camera, is fixed on the tip. Small incisions help
to insert this tube along with the other surgical equipments. This is
a less invasive type of surgery that needs minimum stay in the hospital
leaving no or very little scar.
The doctor removes the cyst and sometimes the entire ovary through the
laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery removes cancer if at all it
was present while removing the cyst. Removal of cyst rules out the chances
of infection.
The risks and complications that go with this laparoscopic surgery sometimes
makes the doctor opt for an open surgery instead of laparoscopic surgery.
For example, if the cyst is in a condition to burst then a laparoscopic
surgery may cause the rupture of the cyst, spreading the infection to
the other organs nearby.
A critical condition arises when the blood is infected which is called
sepsis. If the cyst is cancerous then there is also the risk of it spreading
to the other parts of the body.
There are chances of blood clotting the leg or arm that can cause inflammation
and pain disrupting the blood circulation. When the blood clot bursts
then it can travel to the lungs causing clot in the lungs. This in turn
can cause chest pain and difficulty in breathing bringing about a critical
situation or even death to the patient.
If the cyst is neglected, if it not a functional cyst, it may turn cancerous
bringing in more problems with it. The pain and bleeding may intensify
which lead to a severe condition. The risk factors increase if the patient
is obese, if the patient is a smoker and an alcoholic.
So, it is better to be honest with the doctor and discuss the risks and
side effects of the operation before the surgery and take the necessary
precautions to have a safe surgery.
