Laparoscopic kidney surgery: Know More about Its Type

laparoscopic kidney surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is one of the most innovative and invasive type of surgery in comparison to the conventional type of surgery. In laparoscopic surgery the patient undergoes small incisions, shorter stay in the hospital, faster recovery, very little pain and leaves small or no scar at

all. With time, there has been a great advancement in this laparoscopic surgery and today with electronics and advanced technology robots help the surgeon in the surgery.

The body of the patient who has malignant diseases like cancer is very weak and is difficult to undergo the open or the traditional surgery. Even if the open surgery is successful, it takes time to recover and heal. The laparoscopic surgery on the other hand takes minimum time and openings that makes the healing of the surgery very quickly. The patient can get back to their normal routine very soon.

The laparoscopic kidney surgery relieves the patient of stress with a small keyhole incision made and the physical scar will heal in no time, which gives the patient a mental satisfaction.

Types of Laparoscopic Kidney Surgeries

Nephrectomy – In this type of surgery, there is a total kidney removal. This is done in the cases of malignant cancer, polycystic kidney disease, kidney donation, due to some injury and for serious kidney infections. A customized laparoscopy procedure called the hand assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy is used to remove the kidney. Although the time taken is a bit more than the open surgery, it is very safe and less painful. The post-operative stay in the hospital is very less and the patient recovers very quickly.

Partial Nephrectomy – This partial nephrectomy is done for patients with large renal tumors and cancers and the kidney is removed partially while removing them. During the surgery, the kidney tissues are preserved as much as possible so the kidney functions properly. A part of the kidney is modified or repaired which requires a minimum stay of two days in the hospital.

Nephro-ureterectomy – In this type of laparoscopic surgery, the kidney and the ureter is totally removed. The upper urinary tract affected by a severe urological disease is treated with this type of surgery. Earlier radical nephroureterectomy was the choice but with the advent of laparoscopic surgery the process is managed easily and has gained popularity.

Pyeloplasty – UPJ (Utero- pelvic junction) obstruction is repaired with this type of surgery where the renal pelvis is modified to drain and to relax the kidney from the pressure. This surgery is done in the conventional method, laparoscopy method and with the robotic method. This method is the best for those who suffer from serious kidney function, kidney stones and weak kidney functioning.

The partial nephrectomy is a risky and a complicated form of surgery as the partial removal may not be very safe. There are chances of the cancer cells and the infections to reoccur. There is urine leak for a longer time due to the poor function of the kidney. Healing complications also exist and at times, the patient may need a total removal of the kidney.
